Just a couple of historical notes by Frank Holmes: [circa 2005?]

Mighty Bright 9760 had a small, lacy white blanket that set on top of his hips. It was not roan; it had sharply-defined edges.

Bright Delight 13600 was a true snowcap - verified by her breeding and her production record. Bright Delight had the prototype snowcap pattern right down to the white-tipped ears. Her production record shows her to be a 100 percent color producer. I have heard that she did produce one solid colt but I could never document it. On a scale of one to ten her head was a four, but she was a great bodied mare and out-produced herself:

Peggy's Delight 6163, her dam [Bright Delight], was bred by Francis "Biddy" Peavy, the eldest of the two Peavy daughters. She (the mare) was born solid and registered with AQHA. She subsequently colored up and was purchased by Lane Hudson and registered with ApHC. Peggy's sire was Red Dog AQHA P-55 and her dam was Petey AQHA P-1773. I saw a photo of Petey at Lane's after he had moved to Texas. She was a recognizable Appaloosa - purchased by Biddy as a child at one of Coke Roberds' sales for $125. Mavis told me Biddy got the mare cheap because none of the men would bid against her.

Mavis and both her daughters are gone now. During the last two years of her life, I was successful in getting Mavis on 10 tapes that transcribed into 400 pages of historical recollections. I promised her I would turn the tapes into one half of a book on the Si Dawson, Coke Roberds and Marshall and Mavis Peavy horses. I mean to keep that promise.

Mavis Peavy lost her husband in the mid-1940s. She continued running the huge Peavy Hereford cattle and Quarter Horse ranch (40 broodmares) AND raise two teen-aged girls when that was "not what a woman was supposed to do." I met Mavis for the first time when I was 22. I consider her one of the all-time great ladies of the West.
Marshall Peavy was always a QH breeder first; he never was an Appaloosa breeder...he just had one line of Coke Roberds color in his herd that he refused to cull out...they were his best horses. Mavis was also a QH breeder first. She did not become an Appaloosa breeder until she raised Peavy Bimbo F-4557 out of her beloved mare Chipeta, and Peavy's Uncle Sam 39456 out of the Chipeta daughter Papoose Peavy.

At it's zenith, Lane Hudson's breeding program was based on using Mr. Big Wig 77133 on Mighty Bright daughters. Many of the daughters were solid but were full sisters to the high-priced show horses. Lane realized, as did Cecil Dobbin, that the cross of blanket-hipped stallions on home-bred "pink-papered" mares accomplished two critical positive things. It helped maintain the integrity of the breeding program AND it helped preserve the sharply-defined, non- roaning blanket patterns that we all loved.
