All Spice 29487/CRHA 488

by Sherry Byrd - Pedigree Researcher

The Mare All Spice was foaled April 30, 1962. She is described in the ApHC and CRHA records as being light sorrel, white with sorrel spots over body. CRHA records list her as being bred and owned by Lorne and Vera Knisley of Ft Collins, Colorado. ApHC records listed her as being owned by the Knisleys, but gives no information as to the breeder. Her connection to the Knisleys makes her a piece of CRHA history.

All Spice's Pedigree connects to the very roots of both Appaloosa and Rangerbred breeds, bringing a legacy of color production and breed history through the generations. Early and pre-registry ApHC and/or CRHA breeders and/or owners can be seen with this pedigree, as well as known early and pre-registry bloodlines.

Pedigree Background

The Leopard King F-2088/CRHA 360, a black leopard, was bred by the Knisleys. Spot Cache F-2087/CRHA 414, black with white spots over loin and hips, was bred by Archie Davis, of Buford, Wyoming, and owned by the Knisleys. Manta Blanca F-1988/CRHA 350, dun/white was bred by Anna Davis of Buford, Wyoming. Granite Canyon F-2049/CRHA 344, a black leopard was also bred by Anna Davis and owned by the Knisleys.
Granite Canyon is said to be sired by Rainy Moon F-181, out of the Rangerbred matriarch, Palomar CRHA 131. Lucky Lucy F-740, a blue roan with blanket and black spots, was bred by Gearheart Dyke of Colfax, Washington and owned by CE Kennedy of Colfax, Washington. Midget B F-1402, a red roan, was bred by Louie Biltoft of Alliance, Nebraska, as was Biltoft's Chico F-1166, a blue roan with chestnut spots. Midget B also produced Miss Papoose F-1780 and Fan Tail K 66828. Midge F-758, a red roan with white spots over her body, was bred by Sandy Biltoft of Alliance, Nebraska. Midge also produced Powder River Roxy F-1312. All in all, the mare All Spice packs quite a wallop of Rangerbred foundation, tracing once to Patches CRHA #1 and 4 times to Max CRHA #2 in traceable pedigree. It is possible that Foxie may also be a Rangerbred.

Lorne and Vera Knisley and Anna (Annie) Davis are listed as early Rangerbred owners in the CRHA Stud Book. Louie Biltoft is not listed in CRHA records, but has been proven to have owned several early Rangerbred horses. Biltoft bought horses from the Pine Ridge Indian Agency and used the Remount service that was available there. The Remount stallion that was at the Pine Ridge Agency at that time was in fact Silver Leopard CRHA 64, who was sold to the Department of the Interior in 1943.

All Spice's story continues with her very limited progeny. Her only recorded production was K and D's Nahche T-156690, a 1971 black leopard stallion and K andD's Wahee 139918, a sorrel leopard stallion, both being sired by Zipper Bill AQHA 333960. Both K and D's Nahche and K and D's Wahee were bred by Dick Anderson of Moffat, Colorado and owned by Kenneth L. Biggs of Moffat, Colorado. It is not known how long Nahche and Wahee stayed at the Biggs' Ranch, since the ApHC does not release transfer records. Eddie and Wanda Wood's Pay Day Ranch, in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, had an advertisement for the leopard mare K and D's Streak B (daughter of K and D's Nahche), in the October 1979 Appaloosa News. K and D's Wahee sired K and D's Thunder, 1981 Competitive Trail Distance Medallion Winner.

The Quarter Horse stallion, Zipper Bill, used in the Biggs program, along with several different Appaloosa stallions, also sired K and D's Shaya T-15760, who was the dam of K and D's Chipeeta T-271255, sired by K and D's Natche. Keneth Biggs also owned the Rangerbred mare K and D's Sis T-176457, a daughter of Bayette CRHA -NR. Bayette carries Rangerbred bloodlines through her dam, Iron Cloud's Squaw F-1068, by Silver Chief CRHA 297 (descendant of Silver Leopard CRHA 64). Iron Cloud's Squaw also produced Beauty Girl F-1405, who in turn produced Oswego Kid F-2797, Dawn's Foxfire F-4181, Mr Cayuse Golden Hoof F-1981 and Travois of Horseshoe Hill F-3010. K and D's Sis went on to produce K and D's Moytoy T-232153 and K and D's Sissy (sired by K and D's Nahche).
