As to the pedigree of Paisano F-1023, the sire of PiasaroÉ

Paisano

The ApHC Stud Book shows his sire Arizona Gold and his dam Bunny to be unregistered horses of undetermined breed.

Paisano was featured in many stallion ads (with photo) in the Western Horseman magazine when he stood in Shadwell, Virginia with owner L. Clay CampÕs Glenmore Farm [11-1958, 4-1960, 6-1960, 8-1960, 9-1960, 10-1960, 11-1960, 12-1960, and others].

In reality his sire is Arizona Gold AQHA 26618. He is sired by: Lucky Blanton AQHA 1746 out of an unregistered mare shown as Bobette in the advertisement. AllBreed and the AQHA database shows the dam of Arizona Gold to be Babette -NR-QH. Arizona Gold AQHA was sold to early Appaloosa breeder Myrtle Brown, of Arbuckle, California. He was later sold to a roping/reining trainer also in California. The AQHA has no record of transfers for Arizona Gold.

As per the AQHA database and the AQHA Stud Book, Lucky Blanton AQHA 1746 is sired by Mark AQHA 4249, out of an unregistered QH mare named Gold Nugget. Mark -NR-QH is sired by Red Cloud -NR-QH, out of Maga -NR-QH. The AQHA Stud Book shows MagaÕs dam to be an Art Echols mare. Gold Nugget -NR-QH is sired by Lucky -NR-QH out of the unregistered QH mare Katy Belle by Big Dutch -NR-. AllBreed shows Red Cloud, Maga, and Lucky all sired by Possum (aka King) by Traveler.

Red Cloud -NR-QH (foaled 1919) has two different pedigrees. Andrea Mattson shows him to be sired by Possum (aka King), a son of Traveler; out of the unregistered mare Birdy. Mattson gives the pedigree of Birdy as being sired by No Good (son of Barney Owens) out of the mare Birdie Hopkins (by John Crowder). Robert Denhardt shows Red Cloud to be sired by Possum (aka King), a son of Traveler, out of the unregistered mare Dottie. Denhardt gives DottieÕs pedigree the same as Mattson's Birdy version.

Lucky is shown by AllBreed to be sired by Possum (aka King), a son of Traveler, out of an unknown mare. Denhardt shows Lucky (aka Wolf aka Apache Kid) to be sired by Guinea Pig, who was sired by Possum (aka King). Mattson does not recognize Lucky or Wolf in her book.Mattson does recognize Apache Kid, being sired by Guinea Pig, but not by any other name.Mattson and Denhardt disagree on the pedigree of Guinea Pig (foaled 1922). Mattson shows him to be sired Possum (aka King) out of a mare called Mamie (No Good by Barney Owens X Birdie Hopkins). Denhardt shows the same pedigree except he does not recognize Birdy Hopkins in the pedigree.

Babette (aka Bobette) is shown to be sired by a Thoroughbred stallion named Bob Shannon (foaled 1927) out of an unknown mare (unknown parentage) in the AQHA database. AllBreed and the AQHA Stud Book shows Babette to be sired by the Thoroughbred stallion Bob Shannon out of an unregistered QH mare named Nettie.Nettie is shown to be sired by Barney -NR-QH.

Bob Shannon (TB) is a paternal grandson of Fair Play (TB) who won the First Special Stakes, Municipal Handicap, Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes, Montauk Stakes, Flash Stakes, Lawrence Realization Stakes, Jerome Handicap, and the Brooklyn Derby (later named dwyer Stakes). Fair Play was the Leading U.S. Sire in 1920, 1924, and 1927, as well as the Leading Broodmare Sire 1931, 1934 and 1938. Fair Play sired Man OÕWar- winner of the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes, Chance Play- 1927 Horse of the Year, Mad Play- winner 1924 Belmont Stakes, Chance Shot - 1927 Belmont Stakes winner, and Mad Hatter -1924 Champion Handicap Horse.

Barney's pedigree shows him to be sired by Sam King (Hondo X Sykes Mare), out of a Cardwell dun mare. Both AllBreed and Andrea Mattson agree that Hondo was sired by Sykes Rondo. Mattson does not recognize Barney in her book, but does recognize Sam King, Hondo and Sykes Rondo. Denhardt recognizes Barney as the stallion named CardwellÕs Barney (Sam King X Cardwell dun mare).

**********

In reality PaisanoÕs dam is shown to be Bunny F-521. She was listed as unregistered in PaisanoÕs ApHC Stud Book entry. Her breeder is listed as Ed Brown, husband of Myrtle Brown. Her sire is shown as Red Wing -NR- no breed or breeding details. And her dam is shown as Freckles -NR- breed or breeding? Research would show that Freckles was an Appaloosa as the name might hint, being sired by Myrtle Brown's unregistered Appaloosa stallion El Capitan whom Brown showed years prior to the start of the ApHC . There is a pedigree for El Capitan -NR-Appaloosa, showing sire to be Skylock and his dam to be a "blind Appaloosa mare"-- both noted as "Al G. barnes Circus horses".

Red Wing[s] was in fact a registered Morgan stallion, #7965. This bay stallion was foaled 1933. He was bred by noted Morgan breeder Roland G. Hill of Chowchilla, California (also addressed as Bakersfield, California) and owned by the Horseshoe Cattle Company, also of Chowchilla, California. Red Wing[s] was sold 8-1936 to L.C. Montgomery, U.S. Naval Hospital, Mare Island, California.

Red Wing[s] was sired by Querido #7370, out of Tab #4214. Querido (Bennington #5693 X Artemisia #2731), foaled 1923, was bred by the U.S. Morgan Horse Farm in Middlebury, Vermont. Querido was sold to Roland G. Hill of Bakersfield, California in March 1924, and Hill would sell him to Hawaii in November 1937. Tab (Texas Allen #6650 X Birdie # X4211) was bred by noted Morgan breeder Richard Sellman of Rochelle, Texas, foaled in 1918. Sellman sold Tab to Roland G. Hill in November 1922 when he lived at Keene, California.

As to the pedigree of Bonny B F-1024, the dam of Piasaro F-1451É.

Bonny B's sire is listed as Red Wings -NR- breed? Red Wings was in fact a registered Morgan and his pedigree has been detailed above with PaisanoÕs dam Bunny F-521. Her dam is shown to be an unregistered mare named Marcheta of undetermined breeding or breed. Given that her sire Red Wings is a registered Morgan #7965, Marcheta would have had to carry the Appaloosa genetics, as further research has shown her sire to be an unregistered Appaloosa stallion named El Capitan (see above - Bunny F-521/Freckles) and her dam to be an unregistered Appaloosa mare named Cricket.

Bonny B F-1024 would produce Piasaro II F-2464 (sired by Piasaro F-1451). Piasaro II was owned by R.O. Lewis and M.G. Marsh of Sonora, California. This leopard colt would win the 2-year-old stallion class at the 1960 Mother Lode Fair in Sonoma, California.
PiasaroIIThese were the first Appaloosa halter classes held at this fair. At the same fair in 1961, Piasaro II was named Grand Champion Stallion as shown in a show photo published in the 10-1961 Appaloosa News. The 2-1963 Appaloosa News would feature an article about Piasaro II titled "Piasaro II of L-M Appaloosa Ranch is Star Performer".

Bonny B F-1024 would also produce Piasaro's Bonny F-2030 (sired by Piasaro F-1451). Piasaro's Bonny would produce Miss Bitty Bounce F-3112 (bred by Brown).
MissBittyBounce Miss Bitty Bounce carried Paint genetics through her sire Mr. Bounce F-797. Miss Bitty Bounce would produce Flyin Raindrops T1335573 and full sister Quinta's Miz Bitty 283747 (by Quinta's Flyin String 38010).

Myrtle Brown bred several early registered Appaloosas including Paisano F-1023, Bonny B F-1024, Paisetta F-1818/T-291, Frost Etta F-1819/T-528, Piasano's Frost F-1450, Piasaro F-1451, Piasaro's Bonny F-2030 (out of Bonny B F-1024), Pariso F-2031, Poquita Pariso F-2745, Miss Bounce F-2746, Dream Boat T-1243, Miss Bitty Bounce F-3112 (sired by Mr. Bounce F-797Ð paint through unregistered sire Rainbow), and Mr. Kim F-3948. She owned Paisaro's Azucar F-4211 and Ella Freckles F-776 (Desert Chief PHS 246 -Pinto X Sheba Rose F-160.

Myrtle bred unregistered Appaloosas for years prior to the ApHC and registered Appaloosas into the 1990s. An advertisement for the complete dispersal sale of her final horses can be found in the July 1991 Appaloosa Journal. The sale included 5 mares, a 3YO stallion, a yearling colt and filly, with four of those horses being sired by Quinta's Mr. Gobar (pictured in the ad). [NOTE: ApHC Database shows name to be Quintas Mr. Gobar T268537] Myrtle Brown bred and owned Quinta Mr. Gobar. The ad states Myrtle, 93 years old at the time "devoted 75 years to improving the breed".

As per ApHC Stud Book, Quintas Mr. Gobar is sired by Mr. Go Bar AQHA 699408, out of the registered Appaloosa mare Flyin Raindrops T135573. Mr. Go Bar, foaled 1968, is said to be one of the last breeding sons of the great Three Bars (JC),and out of a Go Man Go AQHA daughter. [NOTE: Not the same stallion as Mr. Gobar, AQHA 766293,foaled 1971]

Flyin Raindrops T135573 was bred and owned by Myrtle Brown. She was sired by Quinta's Flyin String T38010 and her dam was the Brown-bred mare Miss Bitty Bounce F-3112 (discussed above). Quinta's Flyin String T38010 was sired by Quinta Chief T-236, out of the Thoroughbred mare Lucky String (Piggin String X Mala Raya).
QuintasFlyinString
Quinta Chief T-236 was sired by Catechu AQHA 1331, out of the mare Sally Rand F-1527.
SallyRand
Sally Rand F-1527 was sired by Smokey T AQHA 1147, a product of the Coke Roberds' program. Sally Rand's dam was the unregistered ApHC/QH mare named Blue Vitriol (aka Blue Vitrol), who was also the dam of the famed Joker B F-678. Blue Vitrol was considered a QH for many years even though she was an Appaloosa roan product of the Coke Roberds' program.

The April 1983 Appaloosa News published an article about Myrtle Brown titled "Myrtle Brown- Pioneering the Appaloosa Breed" that had several questionable statements. In this article Myrtle is credited as the breeder of Mistep F-301, while the ApHC Stud Book shows the breeder is Herb Camp of Lacross, Washington, with the next owner being D.A. Christiansen, of Kendrick, Idaho, and later being sold to Brown. The article also states Myrtle was the breeder of Bunny F-521, who was actually bred by her husband Ed Brown as per the ApHC Stud Book. Royal Flush F-1848 is also stated as being bred by Myrtle Brown, but the ApHC Stud Book shows his breeder to be W.E. Cooper of Taylorsville, California.

Ironically, Myrtle Brown as stated in the July 1991 sale ad in the Appaloosa Journal, "devoted 75 years to improving the breed" using TB, AQHA, Morgan, and Paint.
