Appaloosa History:
Idalou's Stock Farm, British Columbia

This research project started out of curiosity after I saw the name prefix "Idalou's". I decided to check the ApHC Database to see if there were any other horses with that name prefix. I was quite surprised to find several registered horses with this prefix. Getting names and registration numbers from the ApHC Database, I cross checked them with the ApHC Stud Books, and found that a lot of the horses from this Canadian breeding program were in fact ÒLost RangerbredsÓ. I then checked the ApHCC Stud Books and found more horses with that name prefix that were registered in Canada, as well as cross references of ApHCC registration numbers for most of the "Idalou's" ApHC registered horses.

The Idalou's Stock Farm was owned by Fred L. Harris. He was originally listed as living in North Surrey, British Columbia, as per some registration listings. Later he was listed as living in Delta, British Columbia, and even later in Aldergrove, British Columbia. All of these towns are somewhat close to Vancouver. Unfortunately I have not found out any further information about Idalou's Stock Farm at this time.

Working from ApHC and ApHCC Stud Books, Harris had some of his breeding stock from the U.S. and registered with the ApHC. He would re-register these horses with the ApHCC. Other breeding stock came from Canada. Some of the foals would only be registered with the ApHCC, while others would be double registered ApHCC and ApHC. It is very likely that the Rangerbred heritage of the horses used and bred by this program was unknown to Harris, as records show that the horses in question were not registered with CRHA, nor were their ancestry noted as such.

The matriarchs of the Idalou's Stock Ranch program were Lady Seaforth ApHC T14897/ApHCC 5233 (foaled 8-1960) and Teceka ApHC T14898/ApHCC 4689 or 4690 (foaled 5-1959). Both mares were bred and owned in British Columbia. T. Rolf of Haney, British Columbia bred Lady Seaforth. While a Mr. Reece of Alexis Creek, British Columbia bred Teceka (not CRHA). Mr. and Mrs. K.J. Ruddick, Stave Falls, British Columbia were listed as their owners prior to Harris owning them.

Lady Seaforth is a "Lost Rangerbred" who produced several foals and had several grandget for the program.

Lady SeaforthÕs sire is listed as Rolfara, an unregistered/unidentified stallion by both the ApHC and ApHCC records. Further research has shown that Rolfara was in fact a registered Arabian, AHR (US) 9938 and CAHR (Canada) 188. Judging by the name there was a connection between Rolfara and Lady SeaforthÕs breeder T. Rolf. The Arabian Stud Book does not list an owner for the stallion, only the breeder- Robert Field, Leavenworth, WASH. Rolfara is a grandson and great grandson of Raffles AHR 952.

Lady SeaforthÕs dam is Lightfoot ApHC F-1577/CRHA-NR. Lightfoot is sired by Spatterwork F-1529/CRHA-NR. Spatterwork is a son of the mare Waota F-770, who traces to Sheik Jibbah CRHA-NR-100 and Columbine CRHA-NR-101, both of whom trace to Max CRHA #2.

Lady Seaforth produced the following foals:

Lady SeaforthÕs grandget would include:

The stallion Tecekasim T47859/ApHCC 4663 (foaled 3-1964) was bred and raised by Harris' "Idalou's" program. He was a "Lost Rangerbred" through his sire Similkimeen T7555/CRHA-NR/ApHCC 702. His dam was the matriarch mare Teceka T14898/ApHCC 4689 (not CRHA).

Similkimeen was sired by Similkimeen Monty, Half-Arabian #10713, out of the mare registered Appaloosa mare Jolie Blonde T23709/CRHA-NR. The ApHC lists Jolie BlondeÕs parents as Silver X FlyÑboth unregistered/unidentified. In reality Silver was CRHA 113 and Fly was CRHA 94. Both Silver CRHA 113 and Fly CRHA 94 were bred by Mike Ruby. Silver was sired by Fox CRHA 10, who was a son of Leopard CRHA 3 (son of Max CRHA 2). Fly was a daughter of Patches CRHA 1.

Similkimeen not only sired Tecekasim, but also sired

Spotluck Rangitang ApHC/ApHCC/CRHA-NR sired:

Spotluck Vindicator ApHCC/CRHA-NR sired

Retreat Helliann ApHC/ApHCC/CRHA-NR produced

Retreat Purchase ApHCC/CRHA-NR would produce Retreat Super Bee (g) ApHCC 6710/CRHA-NR>

Tecekasim would sire

Grandget of Tecekasim include:

IdalouÕs Lass T142615/CRHA-NR/ApHCC 3391 was a daughter of Lady Seaforth 14897/CRHA-NR/ApHCC 5233. Her sire was Pago Perdido T-9695/CRHA-NR. His "Lost Rangerbred" heritage goes back through his sire JuniorÕs Speckel King T-427/CRHA-NR, tracing back through his dam Flicka J F-1696/ApHCC 7, who was sired by White Chief ApHCC 36 (AKA Silver King CRHA 153). Harris is credited as the breeder of Idalou's Lass in the ApHC Stud Book, but the ApHCC Stud Book lists her breeder as P. Rowley, Crossfield, Alberta.

The leopard stallion Silver King CRHA 153 was purchased from Colorado and taken to Canada. There he was registered as White Chief ApHCC 36. His ApHCC records do not provide a breeder, but show he was owned by H. Burgoyne, of Delbourne, Alberta. ApHCC records list his parents as "unknown". As per CRHA records Silver King/White Chief was sired by Polar Bear CRHA 19, who was sired by Ranger CRHA 4 (a son of Max CRHA 2); out of the mare Pippin CRHA 14 who was sired by Leopard CRHA 3 (son of Max CRHA 2). Both Polar Bear and Pippin were bred by Mike Ruby.

It is apparent that the "Idalou's" lines did not breed on to any extent.
