Appaloosa History:
Malaga

This little known ApHC/CRHA breeding program of Dr. Robert (Bob) K. and Iris Rose Brabrook, of Malaga, Washington used the prefix "Malaga" with the horses they bred/owned. Their farm was called "Malaga's Leopard Land". The entries for Malaga horses in the ApHC and CRHA Stud Books show the program existed from 1976-1979 as per registrations. There does not seem to be very much dispersion of this programÕs bloodlines

The bloodlines used in the Malaga program were quite varied. ApHC lines included Simcoe's Pataha 8824, Apache F-730, Simcoe, Toby lines, and a heavy influence of Bambi E F-2497.
The Bambi E bloodline horses included:
Sully's Lancer 162876 (double bred Bambi E grandson) who sired Malaga's Sully 242764 (out of Taffy Top 191850/CRHA-NR who was sired by Bambi E);
Sully Melody 222622 (by Bambi E) dam of Malagas Sweet E 309267/CRHA 1567 (aka Malaga's Sweet-E);
Sully's Pattern 16061 (by Bambi E), sire of Malagas Sully Pat 230189; and
Sunspot's Eclipse 225244/CRHA 1587 (grandson of Bambi E --- further discussion below).

[NOTE: Malagas Sully Pat was bred by Lee Warne, SD and owned by Iris Rose Brabrook and given the Malaga prefix at registration]

The CRHA bloodlines used in the program were more limited with Silver Leopard II T-1554/CRHA 248 and a heavy use of Sunspot Revel F-1904/CRHA 1380 lines, particularly through Sunspot's Eclipse 225244/CRHA 1587.
The Silver Leopard II bloodline was through the mare Taffy Top 191850/CRHA-NR tracing back through her dam West Winds Taffy 10613/CRHA-NR, tracing through her dam Pokohauntas T-1850/CRHA-NR, through her sire Silver Leopard II T-1554/CRHA 248 (Silver Leopard CRHA 64/ApHC-NR X Pretty II CRHA 44/ApHC-NR).
Taffy Top would produce:
Malaga's Sully 242764/CRHA-NR (by Sully's Lancer II);
Malagas Sully Pat 230189 (by Sully's Pattern); and
Malaga's Top-E (aka Malagas Top E) 309266/CRHA 2139 (by Sunspot's Eclipse)

Easter Sun Girl

Two of the Sunspot Revel F-1904/CRHA 1380 bloodlines used in the Malaga program come through the mare Easter Sun Girl 183147/CRHA 1439. Easter Sun Girl is sired by Commanche Sun T-54074 (by Sunspot Revel) out of the mare Little Charity 103674 (by Sunspot Revel).

[NOTE: An advertisement for the Sundance Ô500Õ International Stallion Directory in the 2-1977 Appaloosa News promoted Commanche Sun, who was also promoted in the 1981-1985 Sundance Newsletters in the Stallion Directory and/or the Stallion Service Auction sections]

Easter Sun Girl would produce two full siblings:
Malaga Spectaclar T-268093 and
MalagaÕs Sunspeck T-291780/CRHA 2045 (aka Malagas Sunspeck),
both sired by Gay Feathers Speckle T-137289 (tracing to Bambi E).

Easter Sun Girl would also produce Malagas Sun-E-Reb 309269/CRHA 2140 (aka Malagas Sun E Reb), sired by Sunspot's Eclipse.

Now we come to the stallion Sunspot's Eclipse 225244/CRHA 1587. The CRHA Stud Book entry shows he was bred bred by the Edwin Schnatz estate in Texas, and was owned by Iris Brabrook in Washington when he was registered with CRHA. An advertisement for the Sundance '500' International Stallion Directory in the 2-1977 Appaloosa News, shows that Sunspot's Eclipse was owned by MalagaÕs Leopard Land. He would later be owned by Gala Argent in California and later by Sawyer Creek Appaloosas in New York.

Malaga's Sundance [1979] T-307621/SBC #163 was promoted in an undated Sundance '500' Stallion Directory as standing at Horace and Phyllis Leister's 'Top of the Rock Appaloosas', in East Wenatchee, Washington. The Leisters offered the stallion in the Sundance Stallion Service Auction for multiple months in 1983 in respective issues [1-1983 through 5-1983 and the June/July 1983 issue] of the Sundance Newsletter. The Leisters also had a full page ad for the stallion in the 2-1983 Sundance Newsletter. Malaga's Sundance was also listed in the Sundance '500' Stallion Directory in the 1-1983 Sundance Newsletter. Malaga's SundanceÕs existence as a stallion seems to have been as short as was his sire record, having just one recorded foal in the ApHC records Ð a mare named Blizzard Sun 427524
