The Story of Sunspot Revel F-1904/CRHA 1380-N, written by Ralph Cannon [not positive of author ~AT]

Sunspot Revel has come home to North Carolina. For the past three years he has been in Ohio, standing at stud in place of his beautiful leopard son Me Sunspot, who died there early in 1973. Now Sunspot Revel has come home to stay -- at Cannondale Farm, 3 miles from Spruce Pine and 15 miles north of Marion, in the North Carolina mountains. This is his 18th season as Senior Sire for Sun Appaloosas.

Sunspot Revel is a leopard, white with bay spots, who stands over 15 hands and weighs 1200 pounds in breeding condition. His achievements in the performance arena and on the racetrack, from 1961 thru 1965, and at stud since then, have made him known over the world. His sire, Revel Junior F-1728 was the first Appaloosa to be recognized by the NCHA as Cutting Appaloosa of the Year, first in 1961, again in 1962. Sunspot's dam, Rocking Chair Sun Dance F-587 was an athletic granddaughter of famed Sundance F-500. Sunspot Revel's heritage combines Mansfield's Comanche with the Sundance 500 line of leopards, with another unbroken line of leopards in the Colorado Ranger Horse registry. More than 40% of his recorded ancestors were leopards, and a high proportion of his get and grandget likewise are leopards. His progeny are highly valued and have been sent to many corners of the earth: several hundred of his descendents live abroad, in Canada, Germany, and Australia, in addition to those living across the United States from coast to coast.

For those who have been involved with Appaloosas 10 years or less, a few notes on Sunspot Revel's history as an athlete. Trained by Monte Foreman, he was one of the first Appaloosas to start snatching blue ribbons from quarter horses and Arabians in Reining and Pleasure Classes at large open shows. In the Appaloosa world, he was a top contender in his region and at National Shows and World Playoffs from 1961 thru 1964. In performance he battled it out with other great Appaloosas like Chief Of Fourmile F-2219, Shavano F-1679, General Custer T-1986, Quanah F-706, Burnside's David M 20411, Sharon's Topper F-3352, Patchy Jr F-1380, Tem Pop T-3208, and Absarokee Sunset 7322. On the racetrack he helped establish Appaloosa racing in Colorado and was always the horse to beat. Raced 10 times, winner of 5. His hardest race was a 5 furlong Stakes at Centennial Track in which he was beaten by the great race mare Dawndee T-5393. Just 5 days later, he competed in performance at Colorado State Fair and demonstrated his versatility by winning 2 quiet classes: Trail Class and Western Pleasure. A year later, still the consistent winner, he again won Trail Class at Colorado Sate Fair, for the 3rd year in a row.

Sunspot Revel came to the southeast for the first time in 1971, to stand at stud at Lawriwood Farms in South Carolina. In the spring of 1972 14 sons and daughters were foaled in the southeast. A few of these were shown, compiling an impressive record for their sire. That year three of his daughters, with help from a granddaughter, won 5 out of 6 places in the weanling filly Halter Futurities of the North Carolina and South Carolina Appaloosa horse associations. Two hundred years from today we predict that Sunspot Revel Appaloosa will still be making history, all around the world.

Sunspot Revel was foaled and raised in the Rocky Mountains near Buffalo Bill's grave on Lookout Mountain, west of Golden, Colorado. In the prime of his life, he came down out of the Rockies into the flatlands of the western plains to do battle in the performance arena and on the racetracks. Then for 10 years he served as senior stallion for Sun Appaloosas at Rocky Cliff Ranch on the High Plains southeast of Denver. Then he served at two other flatland breeding farms: Lawriwood Farms near Hemingway, South Carolina and Mountain Meadow Ranch near Hillsboro, Ohio. Now he has again come up into the hills, to spend his last years in the Blue Ridge Mountains, not far from lofty Mount Mitchell. His has been a fitting life style for one of the great horses of the Appaloosa breed. For -- let it never be forgotten -- the rugged Appaloosa originated as a mountain breed, the only native American breed of mountain horses.

George and his son kept the stub clean by putting socks on it and improvising an old boot, till an admirer, Lloyd Hayes built the peg leg. "The Scurvy Kid had a gentle disposition. If his foot became tired or uncomfortable, he would come to George and hold his foot up for inspection."
