Lenape

by Sherry Byrd - Pedigree Researcher

What's in an Appaloosa name?

The Appaloosa, given its Native American heritage tie-in(s) with the Nez Perce, to whatever degree one wishes to believe...has may family line names, based on areas, rivers, mountains, and other geographical features. But, do these names actually have direct associations with the Nez Perce and/or the Pacific Northwest?

Lenape

This name comes from the word Len-Nah-Pah, derived from the Lenni Lenape or Delaware tribe. Historical records, tribal history, and research shows that the Delaware continually migrated northward and westward due to the encroachment of the Europeans on their eastern homelands. Delawares lived in areas of PA, ny, NJ,OH, Canada (prior to 1813), IN, IL (by early 1820s),MO (1820s), KS (1829-1830), and OK (1867). Historical records show the Delawares had horses and cattle by 1800, but would not specifically raise livestock. By the time they moved from the White River area to Kaskaskia, IL, where they would cross the Mississippi to move further westward, they had 'herds' of horses, which the white men stole from.

The main family line of Appaloosas with the Lenape name was based in Perkasie, PA, with the program of DE Henderson. Henderson did breed horses from his own program to carry the Lenape namesake, but also purchased horses from outside of the program, and gave them the Lenape name to carry.

The matriarch of the DE Henderson program was the mare Squaw Dance II T-4428 (unnamed sire x Bonita NR). She was bred by Ed Share of Nampa, Idaho, and owned by Henderson. Squaw Dance II was the dam of 7, granddam of 17, and the great-great-granddam of at least 4 horses that carried the "Lenape" namesake.

Henderson used mare lines from several sources, including the Richard R Blackmore program (Wyoming, NY), Danley/McWilliams programs, Creswell Farm program (Dominion prefix), Cooterville program, and others; and incorporated the lines of Wapiti 5445, High Thunderbird F-1822, Carbine of AA 10760, and Paisano F-1023, along with AQHA, JC and TWHBA lines.

Henderson used several stallions in his "Lenape" program:
Lucky Dice T-9543 (3 foals),
Chuck-A-Luck T-2591 (1 foal),
El Cap-A-Tan T-10522 (18 foals),
Rocking "C"'s Dark Moon T-11365 (4 foals),
Prince Doolin 95980 (10 foals),
Prince Frank Jr 179779 (3 foals).

El Cap-A-Tan, foaled in 1959, was still siring foals in 1977. A granddaughter of El Cap-A-Tan T-10522, Lenape Holliday, was registered 408701.

Among Henderson's horses that he owned and/or bred were:

In the 4/30/1966 Keystone ApHC 2nd Annual Consignment Sale catalog, Henderson had a full page ad for a "private dispersal" of stock. He offered 5 registered Appaloosa mares in foal (and to be re-bred for 3-in-1 packages), 1 registred AQHA mare to be re-bred, 2 Appaloosa fillies, and the stallion Lenape Speckled Sun (also at stud). El Cap-A-Tan was also advertised at stud (not for sale) in the ad.

Henderson advertised Prince Doolin 95980 and Prince Frank Jr 179799 in the Pennsylvania 1975 Stallion Showcase catalog. Prince Doolin, owned and stood by Henderson, was offered at half price stud fee to Thoroughbreds with a track record or to champion performance mares. Prince Frank Jr, was owned by Henderon, but stood at stud by Skip Siefert, at Easton, Pennsylvania. Henderson also offered Prince Doolin at stud in the 2/9/1974 New Jersey Appaloosa Association Stallion Service Auction using the same photo [racing] as shown above.

The Edwards' Caper's Acres also used other lines from Henderson's Lenape program, predominately the Lenape Belle line. Lenape Belle 35095 was sired by Rocking C's Dark Moon 11365 out of Blackmore's Black Feather B 9072. Caper's Acres carried on the Lenape Belle line through her daughter Eagle's Moon Geni 123938 (by Kipona's Double Eagle 39953), and her son Mid-Nite Son 159536 (by Cap-A-Tan Mid-Nite 98293 by El Cap-A-Tan 10522). Many descendants of Lenape Belle would be found in several of the Rimwold Production Sales
