Correct Name:
The ApHC Stud Book Vol IV lists his name incorrectly as KELLEY'S SONNY BOY BRITCHES K,
George Hatley's letter to me dated June 24, 1975...explains the name choices.
The ApHC Application for Registration clearly shows KELLEY'S SONNY BOY was the first choice; BRITCHES K the second choice and is crossed out. The ApHC recorded his name incorrectly and on July 9, 1962 the ApHC corrected name error.
Color/body Description:
Looking at his photo at 9 months on his ApHC Application for Registration, which by the way is not very clear....it is hard to decipher if he is a "roan". Several changes were made, by the owner and ApHC in describing his coat color, pattern and white markings. As a four year old (1st photo above), he looks to have stockings all four, however part of the light areas on his legs are roan in color, not white. Confusion about color, description and markings...original Application with changes made by ApHC.
Additional color, descriptions and markings at top of Application.
Correct Dam:
Much has been written about KELLEY'S SONNY BOY's sire MANSFIELD'S COMANCHE; some history is given on his dam SUSIE Q. Early on there was confusion about the correct name and pedigree of the dam of KELLEY'S SONNY BOY. Was her name SUSIE McCUE or SUSIE Q or SUSIE QUE? Was she a registered Quarter Horse with an Appaloosa coat pattern or was she an Appaloosa mare not registered with the ApHC? The Application clearly shows SUSIE McCUE; then a Q is inserted in front of McCUE which has been crossed out... Her color was listed as "Leopard" and in anothers hand "Black with white spots". With regards to "Leopard" wonder if they meant reversed "Leopard" as in Black with white spots?
On the back of the ApHC Application for Registration, gives an extended pedigree, the following pedigree is shown for SUSIE Q...noted as an AQHA mare with Quarter Sire and Dam....Here again, her color is shown as "Black with white spots". SUSIE McCUE is in a different hand than that of her breed, color/description, sire and dam.
Why was the dams name SUSIE McCUE on the back of the Application not changed to read SUSIE Q., as it was on the front of the Application?
SUSIE McCUE: My thoughts and research on this mare. There is no SUSIE McCUE, SUSIE Q, SUSIE QUE, SUZY McCUE, SUZY Q., SUZIE QUE registered AQHA or NQHBA that fits the above time frame and/or pedigree.
Pedigree of KELLEY'S SONNY BOY as shown in the ApHC Race Record Chart Book 1962-1971, Sire of Runners section. Note typo of SUSIE Q's sire. I honestly do not remember ever seeing this pedigree for SUSIE Q. in any of the advertisements in the Appaloosa News of her siblings, her produce and/or their descendants.
On June 12th 1975 I wrote a letter to Elvin Blevins requesting information on KELLEY'S SONNY BOY's dam, hoping to learn her correct name, breed, etc. The following excerpt is what Elvin Blevins had to say about SUSIE Q, in his letter to me dated June 20, 1975....
I questioned the pedigree of SUSIE Q, as given by Elvin Blevins, because of his reporting an incorrect pedigree for MANSFIELD'S COMANCHE's sire DR HOWARD. Possibly it was an honest mistake on his part and I'm being too critical? I continue, [as resently as June 26th, 2017 and for well over 40 years] to get the ApHC to correct that error; that's another story and for another time.
Elvin also wrote me that he didn't know much about the American Appaloosa Assn (aka AAA), founded in 1953. I am uneasy with that statement....Elvin Blevins showed at least two horses at AAA horse shows and placed well with BUTTONS B. and POTEET B. As I understood it, in order to show in the AAA show, a horse had to be registered AAA. So its very likely that BUTTONS B and POTEET B were registered AAA in 1953 or 1954, as well as ApHC. This all happened about five years before Elvin was elected to the ApHC Board of Directors in 1958.
I then wrote George Hatley and this is his reply from letter dated June 24, 1975...
With regards to Elvin Blevins, the following excerpt is from Wagner's "American Appaloosa Anthology"....
SUSIE Q's pedigree may have started with Elvin Blevins. Following is the "accepted" pedigree for KELLEY'S SONNY BOY by a good number of researchers, and as shown in many advertisements for him, his siblings and his descendants. Even though I feel SUSIE Q's pedigree has not been fully documented...more than likely...she is the dam of KELLEY'S SONNY BOY. Maybe one day in the future "new" old documentation will be uncovered and/or DNA will prove it one way or another.
Show Information: 1961 Reserve National Champion 3Yr Stallion, etc.
No official ApHC Show points...the ApHC Show Point System did not go into effect until 1979. Going thru the Appaloosa News, I only find seven entries for him. His show record may be incomplete as far as state and/or regional and/or open shows go.
1959 Placed 4th Yearling Stallion Class @ Kansas Regional Show.
1959 Placed 2nd Yearling Stallion Class @ American Royal Show.
1959 Won Yearling Stallion Class @ Texas Tri State Fair
1960 Placed 4th 2 Year Old Stallion Class @ Denver National Western Stock Show.
1960 Won 2 Year Old Stallion Class @ Ft Worth Fat Stock Show.
1961 Placed 2nd 3 Year Old Stallion Class @ 14th ApHC National Championship Show.
1962 Grand Champion Appaloosa Stallion @ Houston Livestock Show.
In the Stud: It had been reported that KELLEY'S SONNY BOY at one time commanded a stud fee of $1000. I did not find any evidence of that in the Appaloosa News, however it could have been in another nationally known publication and/or in a state or regional publication. In 1965 he changed hands, the Appaloosa News advertised Stud Fee was $300.
Progeny Information: His progeny record is incomplete, no state, regional and/or open show information noted at this time.
