Notes: For many years, people believed that Dragon Seed T5498 was related to Sundance F500. In 2001, this question came before the SD directors and several directors and members immediately worked on getting answers to the question.
The story is confusing and the records are mixed up in many cases, but here are the facts: per ApHC stud book Vol IV, page 540:

Sire: Conquistador T2230(*** here is where the controversy came in)
Dam: Rexine T742

Conquistador T2230 can be found in Vol IV, page P249 white with red spots over entire body, blaze face, foaled May 23 1952 sire: Cheyenne dam: Fannie bred by Lloyd Ortiz
****according to the computer at ApHC (in 2001 when this question came up), Conquistador T2230 was sired by Cheyenne F1276, who was out of Miss Sundance, out of Leopard Lady who was sired by SD500.

The facts about Cheyenne F1276 are as follows: this horse was registered and owned by Ben Johnson and lived his whole life with Johnson. There are no breedings attributed to this horse. His sire in the stud book is listed as Lucky Boy F406, dam Miss Sundance F235, bred by Ben Johnson, foaled May 12, 1949. He is listed as a dun, white with brown spots over loin and hips, wide blaze, with stockings on both hind.
Lucky Boy F406 (listed as a gelding) is listed as dun, white with dun spots over loin and hips, white sock left hind. Bred by F.L. Chaffin, Grand Junction, CO, owned by Ben Johnson. Foaled spring 1946. So Johnson used Lucky Boy as a stallion, gelded and registered him.
According to the research, Conquistador T2230 was purchased as a stallion, along with month old Dragon Seed by Janice Parsons (Haught) in May 1959 from Lloyd Ortiz. Ms. Haught indicated that the sire and dam of Conquistador was fictionalized by Ortiz in order to get him registered with ApHC when she was questioned in 1971 about Dragon Seed's pedigree by other SD breeders. The actual breeding of Conquistador is not known, and no further records have been found from L. Ortiz to indicate the real bloodlines.
Further research produced a letter in 1976 from George Hatley regarding the two Cheyennes, and he wrote that: " the original application for Conquistador, describes Cheyenne as a bay with blanket, spots and unregistered.
and that: Ben Johnson's Cheyenne (the dun) "was castrated as a yearling and was registered the same year he was foaled". Mr. Hatley concludes that Conquistador T2230 was sired by unregistered Cheyenne. (the bay)
This means that Dragon Seed is not related to Sundance F500 as some thought due to faulty records, and that Conquistador has, in reality, no documented pedigree.
